First Couples Counseling Session: What to Expect

By Amanda Holmberg, MS LMFT

Starting couples counseling can bring up a mix of emotions. You might feel hopeful, nervous, uncertain, or even a little skeptical. At Radiant Living Therapy, we understand that making the decision to start therapy is not a simple one.  That’s why we aim to make your initial session supportive, structured, and focused on helping you feel more grounded in the process.

Here’s what you can expect during your first couples counseling session:

We Start With Your Story

Our first goal is to get to know you as a couple. We’ll ask about how your relationship began, the important moments you’ve shared, and what has led you to seek therapy now. This includes exploring the strengths you bring to the relationship, as well as the challenges or recurring struggles that may have come up over time.

These conversations help us understand the larger picture so we can better support you.

Exploring Personal and Relationship History

To truly understand what is happening in your relationship today, we also take time to explore each of your individual backgrounds. This might include:

  • Your early family experiences or past relationships
  • Any significant life events that may influence how you show up in partnership
  • Beliefs about love, trust, conflict, or emotional closeness that developed over time

We are not looking to assign blame. Instead, we want to understand how past experiences may be shaping the way you relate to one another right now.

Identifying Patterns and Root Issues

As we listen to your experiences, we begin to notice patterns that might be keeping you stuck. These could be emotional reactions, communication habits, how your attachment styles work together as a couple, or cycles of conflict that feel hard to break.

Our goal is to help you recognize these patterns and begin shifting them in ways that support deeper connection, clearer communication, and mutual understanding. We like to be very clear about what the patterns are and give concrete tools to start working to change them.

Laying Out a Preliminary Treatment Plan

By the end of the first session, we will offer our early impressions and share a general treatment plan. This includes:

  • What each of you hopes to work on
  • The key areas we’ll be focusing on in therapy
  • Our recommendation for the frequency of sessions and the overall process

This plan will likely evolve as we continue to gather more information and work together over time. It simply gives us a starting point and a shared direction.

We Are Solution-Oriented and Practical

We know that therapy is an investment of your time, energy, and money, and we want you to feel that it’s worth it. Our approach is solution-oriented.  This means we don’t just explore the past, we also work toward practical and meaningful change. In each session, we aim to provide tangible suggestions, tools, and insights you can use right away to improve your relationship. Whether it’s a communication strategy, a new way to navigate conflict, or a shift in perspective, we want every session to move you closer to your goals.

A Safe Space to Begin Again

Ultimately, our goal is to create a space where both of you feel heard, respected, and supported—especially if that’s been hard to find lately. Couples counseling is not about choosing sides. It’s about helping you learn how to understand and respond to each other in more connected, constructive ways.
